Position Ice Anchor on a level surface preferably on bare ice. Holding power will be reduced if used on snow. Orient the anchor so that the winch is pointing at the victim. Observe all precautions regarding safe distance from the victim. Verify that the ice you are operating on is safe.

Drive the 3 pins into the ice with the supplied hammer. Leave at least 1" of pin protruding above the anchor.

Remove the slack in the line by hand. Once a load is felt, wrap the line 3 to 4 times around the winch drum (clockwise when viewed from above). It is important that the line be wrapped neatly around the drum, without overlapping the wraps.

Drive the 3 pins into the ice with the supplied hammer. Leave at least 1" of pin protruding above the anchor.

If a mechanical advantage is desired, simply insert the winch handle and rotate clockwise. The user will now enjoy an 8.3:1 mechanical advantage. A light tailing pressure is required on the outgoing line. This can be done by the same person cranking the handle or by a second trailer. It is very important to keep your eyes on the victim and Not the winch. The winch provides enough pulling force to harm a person, so care must be exercised. If slack is desired at any time, simply stop cranking and release on the tailing force. It helps to think of the person cranking the handle as the engine and the person tailing as the clutch. The tailer can fully control the pulling force of the winch by simply adjusting the tailing force. If all tailing force is removed, the winch will simply freewheel and not pull-in any line. Wraps can be removed from the drum if less friction is desired. The winch is manufactured to allow for ratcheting action, thus full rotations of the handle are not necessary.

Do not allow anyone to pull up in the line ahead of the winch (to help the winch) as this could cause line override and winch lock-up.

To remove the ice anchor, simply pull up on the back of the board. The board and pins will lift together. Dry all items (especially the hammer as it is not stainless) and store in the provided bag.

Note: The Ice Anchor is intended to be used by professional rescue crews that have been trained in all manner of ice and water rescue. This devise is a tool to be used by qualified professionals and is not a stand alone rescue devise to be used by untrained individuals. The Ice Anchor was designed to be used on ice, and must be used on a level surface where the object being pulled is on the surface. The above assures that the necessary 3 to 8 degree (down) entry angle of the loaded line is maintained. If the load is pulled from above the winch, the line can override, resulting in binding and lock-up. Please observe this one precaution and you will find the lce Anchor to be the most useful tool that you take on the ice.
